Beverley Minster A Television Star

Beverley Minster has been standing for over 1,300 years, but did you know it is quite the tv star? The minster was originally founded in the 8th century by Bishop John of York at a place known as Inderawuda, but this tradition is supported by archaeological research and shows Inderawuda to be the place where Beverley Minster stands today. Here are some TV shows and films you can watch to pass the time during isolation that used Beverley Minster as a filming location.

Victoria

A British period drama television series on ITV starring Jenna Coleman as Queen Victoria. In 2017 while shooting the first series, Coleman and Tom Hughes, who plays Prince Albert, were seen outside Beverley Minster which doubled up as both Westminster Abbey and St James’ Palace. If you like period dramas, then you’ll love this. Plus, there’s plenty of time to binge watch all 3 seasons in isolation and see Beverley transported back in time.

Gunpowder

Film crews were seen at Beverley Minster in February 2017, which starred as the Palace of Westminster. Gunpowder tells the infamous story of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, when a team of conspirators led by Robert Catesby, but most namely including Guy Fawkes, planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament to kill King James I as a response to the protestant oppression of Catholicism. It is a British three-part historical drama, starring Kit Harrington, Peter Mulla, Mark Gatiss and Liv Tyler.

King Charles III

Standing in for the real Westminster Abbey, Beverley Minster features again in this futuristic BBC television film, which follows the story of Prince Charles’ succession to the throne after the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Beverley Minster was used when it came to filming the funeral and coronation scenes. King Charles III was adapted by Mike Bartlett from his play of the same name at the Almeida Theatre. It transferred to the West End and Broadway, and won the 2015 Olivier Award for Best New Play.

Lease of Life

A British film drama from 1954, Lease of Life tells the story of a priest of a small, rural community who upon discovering that he is dying, reconsiders his life so far and wonders what he can still do to help his community. Its beautiful church scenes were filmed at Beverley Minster.
