Adult learning taster week - what will you do next?

With free taster courses running from Monday, 4 September to Thursday, 7 September, there has never been a better time to sign up for a course at an adult learning centre.

Taster sessions are usually two hours long and give an idea of what goes on in a classroom, what adult learning is like and to meet the tutors. There is no pressure to commit to anything further.

Taster sessions on offer include a wide range of subjects, such as try flower arranging, try crochet and try knitting as well as try computers and try using a tablet.

After the try sessions, learners may choose to enrol on one of the main autumn courses which cover a whole range of subjects, aimed at people aged 19 years and over, that can help improve skills to get a job, gain a new qualification or learn something completely new.

Learners can choose a level that is right for them (beginner, intermediate and advanced) and many of the courses lead to a nationally-recognised qualification.

Councillor Andy Burton, cabinet portfolio holder for economic investment, said: “Providing quality adult learning opportunities is a key priority for the council and helps support and grow the local economy by ensuring residents have the necessary skills to achieve their aims and ambitions.

“The council’s employment, education and skills service was awarded a “Good” rating by Ofsted, with inspectors praising the progress learners made and the high standard of the work they produced.

“The autumn course offer and try week really does have something for everyone and we would welcome new learners to join the thousands of others who benefit from education and training with us each year.”

Courses available include counselling and mental health; focus on photography, working with children, English and maths for life and work and ICT related courses, such as computer and digital skills.

Shorter courses are also available, such as knitting, patchwork and quilting as well as favourite courses including pottery, crafts, drawing and painting and flower arranging.
