A Welcome Home: National Adoption Week encourages people to offer a child a perfectly imperfect home

A Welcome Home National Adoption Week Encourages People To Offer A Child A Perfectly Imperfect Home

East Riding of Yorkshire Council and One Adoption North and Humber are calling on people to think about giving a child a “A Welcome Home” this National Adoption Week, 20 to 26 October.

This year’s focus of “A Welcome Home” aims to emphasise that children don’t need perfection, they just need love, safety, and a place to belong. A home could be within a flat, a rented terrace, or a family home where the kitchen table doubles up for meals and homework.

Adopters come from all walks of life; they don’t need to be married or own their own home, adopters just need to be over 21 and ready to provide a safe, nurturing space. People of every race, religion, and background are encouraged to consider adoption.

Adoptive families are supported every step of the way, with access to training, workshops, support groups, and peer mentoring. Adoption isn’t always easy, but it’s one of the most rewarding journeys you can take.

Councillor Victoria Aitken, cabinet member for children, families and education said: “In East Riding we currently have eighteen children who need adopting by people who can offer love, care and stability. I'd encourage people to find out more and consider if they could provide a child with a welcome home."

One Adoption is hosting an online question and answer session for anyone interested in adoption, on Thursday 23 October, 12pm to 1pm. Register at: eryc.link/OneAdoption

Adoption workers and an adoptive parent will be on hand to talk about what adoption is really like and answer questions. The session aims to help people understand more about modern adoption, what's involved, the children waiting for a home and the support offered.
