Sonoco Trident Inspire 3D Artists of Future

Staff from Sonoco Trident in Hull spent a week at East Riding College introducing students from the level 3 media and computing courses to 3D design and specialist modelling software.

This is the first time the global creative design giant has worked with a college to share their insights into the world of 3D design.

Tracey Murray, Head of Curriculum for Art, Design and Media said, “We’re really grateful to Sonoco Trident for providing our students with this opportunity.  It’s fantastic for students to work with an international business – and a leader in its field – on real life 3D product modelling briefs.  The experience adds an extra string to their bow and makes the students even more employable in future.”

Daniel Cook a CGI artist from Sonoco Trident in Hull said, “It’s always enlightening for us to see what the new artists are learning and what they’re passionate about.  We’re introducing them to a piece of software we use every day and it’s great to let them loose on it and see what they come up with!  They’re acquiring a new set of skills and experimenting.  We’ve seen them using texturing on vehicle designs, making models of swords and Pokemon using capture graphics, it’s fascinating to see what ideas they come up with.

“As a business, if we can raise awareness of the opportunities available working with the Modo software we use, we’re creating a ready-made resource of artists with the skills we need.  We’re proud of what we do, and we want to create that spark of interest here this week and turn some of the College’s students into future CGI artists as a result. We’ve been really impressed with the students, they’ve picked everything up so quickly.   We often find young minds can be very quick to learn, but this is the first time we’ve worked with college, not university students and they’ve been really attentive and a credit to the College.”

Media student Luke Dinsdale-Sherrington age 18, from Riston said, “The most enjoyable part was meeting people who work in the industry I am interested in.”

Alex Hatch, age 16 from Beverley who also studies Media said, “after doing this week session I am definitely considering doing 3D modelling in the future.”

Computing student Dawid Lewandowski aged 19 from Hull said, “It’s helped me understand different aspects of IT and I have fully learned the basics of 3D modelling and I can use this in my games development.”
