Steps are being taken to help improve the lives of East Riding residents by focusing on the way health and leisure services work together in order to provide healthier lifestyles at the upcoming Health and Wellbeing Board meeting, which takes place at County Hall, Beverley, on Thursday, 14 March at 2pm.

The core business of East Riding Leisure has evolved to show that health and wellbeing activity is at the very centre of service delivery and that all development, including information technology, partnership and collaboration work, staff development and customer journey management have a major impact on sustaining and improving the health offer to residents.

This offer has matured over the last decade and has been aligned to a major and ongoing programme of facility improvements through the council’s capital programme.

From 16 October 2017 a health and wellbeing programme was implemented for people with a BMI of or greater than 35 and for smokers, the purpose of this programme is to encourage local residents to improve their wellbeing ahead of non-urgent surgery and be supported in living the healthiest lives possible.

This programme is commissioned by the Clinical Commissioning Group. The Clinical Commissioning Group has extended the commission until March 2020 to allow for a full evaluation of the effect of the programme.

Also on the agenda is the Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy, which the Health and Wellbeing Board has a statutory duty to produce under the Health and Social Care Act 2012, which includes the Board’s priorities for meeting the needs identified in the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment.

The Board commenced work on developing a new strategy in May 2018 through workshop activity to review the vision and priorities and consider proposals for the format and content of the strategy.

The health and wellbeing report outlines the process through which the East Riding Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy 2019-22 has been developed, the consultation undertaken as part of that process and asks the Board to approve the final draft of the strategy.

The health and wellbeing board is also focusing on social prescribing, the shared health and social care record, the NHS long term plan, adult social care, the health in all policies update, the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment update and the update on the Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment 2018-2021.

Councillor Jonathan Owen, chair of the Health and Wellbeing Board, said: “The work to improve the lives of those who need support and guidance on healthy living is a key priority to ensure the health and wellbeing of East Riding residents and connecting individuals with appropriate services and community assets is of great importance to us.

“The Board is an important tool in driving forward change in relation to the health and social care needs of East Riding residents and is the perfect platform from which to continue the good work that is already being done locally to address these key priorities.”
