Improvement scheme at Grovehill Road in Beverley starts this month

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has announced that a highway improvement scheme is planned to start on Grovehill Road, Beverley, on Monday, 22 October, and is expected to take six weeks to complete.

The scheme extends from Grovehill Junction eastwards to Zarya Court and involves carriageway widening on the south side, along with the provision of a shared footway/cycleway.

The scheme is costing £430,000, including £387,000 from the Government’s Local Growth Fund secured by the York, North Yorkshire and East Riding Local Enterprise Partnership following the submission of a successful bid by the council.

The widening scheme will allow the parking bays along the north side of Grovehill Road east to be increased to 2m wide, with the carriageway running width increased to 7m. This will reduce the current conflict between parked vehicles and passing traffic and will allow for two HGVs to pass each other safely without the need to pull in and wait.

The contractor carrying out the works is North Midland Construction PLC and, in order to minimise disruption to motorists and the travelling public, the following working restrictions will be put in place:

Within the extents of the site, parking will be suspended for the duration of the works. Alternative parking will be provided in the vacant compound on the south side.
For the duration of the works, the carriageway width will be restricted, however two-way movement will be maintained at all times.
Towards the end of the contract, the carriageway will be resurfaced. This will be carried out between the hours of 7-11pm.

Councillor Symon Fraser, cabinet portfolio holder for strategic asset management, housing and environment, said: “This is another significant scheme for which we have been able to secure funding via a successful bid to the local enterprise partnership’s Local Growth Fund. There is no doubt that the completion of this scheme will result in major benefits for road users on this busy route.”

An East Riding of Yorkshire Council spokesperson said: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused to motorists during these works, but they have been scheduled outside of peak hours to minimise disruption. We hope that road users will bear with us whilst we complete this very important project.”

David Dickson, Chair of the Infrastructure Board for the York, North Yorkshire, East Riding Enterprise Partnership said, ““We are delighted to be working with East Riding of Yorkshire Council on the improvements to Grovehill Road. We are hopeful that following this early work to develop the area, we can continue to work with East Riding and our neighbours at Humber LEP to develop this vital site in Beverley.”

The Minister for the Northern Powerhouse and Local Growth, Jake Berry MP, said:

“We’re committed to boosting economic growth across the whole of the Northern Powerhouse and building a Britain fit for the future.

“It’s great to see the Local Growth Fund supporting better connectivity and addressing a key transport challenge for Beverley. With nearly £400,000 from the Local Growth Fund, this scheme will deliver real improvements for motorists and cyclists in the heart of the Northern Powerhouse.”
