Graham Stuart MP backs Ringers Remembers campaign to commemorate the armistice

Beverley and Holderness MP, Graham Stuart is encouraging his constituents to answer the call of two government departments to recruit 1,400 new campanologists ahead of the centenary of the First World War armistice on 11 November 2018. To mark the final year of the First World War centenary commemorations, 1,400 new bell ringers will be recruited in honour of the 1,400 ringers that lost their lives during the First World War. Bells will then ring out from churches and cathedrals in villages, towns and cities across the country on the 11th November 2018 to mark the armistice.

Big Ben will also strike at 11 am on 11 November this year to mark the centenary. It’s hoped that the campaign to recruit bell ringers will link together the past, present and future and form a fitting commemoration for the armistice.

The campaign, called Ringing Remembers, is being run by the Departments of Communities and Local Government, and Digital, Culture, Media & Sport, in collaboration with Big Ideas Community Interest Company and the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers.

Communities Secretary Sajid Javid said: “The Ringing Remembers campaign will be a fitting end to our projects, events and activities that have marked the end of the First World War and a tribute to the heroic men and women who sacrificed so much for the freedoms we enjoy today.”

Graham said “This is a great idea to mark the armistice as well as to keep the tradition of campanology alive whilst honouring those lost in the Great War. I would encourage any Beverley and Holderness constituents who are interested to email the Big Ideas Company at ringingremembers@bigideascompany.org and get involved”.
