The council’s foreshores team has just invested around £150,000 in two land trains. One of the trains is new to the town after operating in Torquay, and the other has benefited from a brand new engine.

The new additions to the fleet have been tested and licensed and are now ready to transport passengers on the two land train routes in the town.

The total fleet of four land trains run on the north promenade between East Riding Leisure Bridlington and Sewerby Hall and Gardens, linking Bridlington town centre with the summer car parks, and also on the south promenade, linking Bridlington Spa to the Park and Ride and South Cliff Holiday Park.

Kirsty Dingle, facility manager, foreshores, said : “We have significantly invested in refreshing the ageing land train fleet this year , to ensure that they remain reliable and up to date, and able to carry the thousands of passengers for whom a trip on the land train is an essential part of any trip to the seaside! I have no doubt that our visitors will find the new vehicles offer a more comfortable ride than those they replaced.”

The council asked for help via social media to trace the origins of the land train service in Bridlington, and have been informed that the service started running as the Burlington Belle in 1962 and Burlington Bertie in 1963. The original trains used Massey Ferguson tractors to pull the carriages. The service has been running ever since, and has remained hugely popular for 56 years.
