Winter Farm Walks & ‘Wassail’ Open Day
Side Oven Bakery at Foston on the Wolds are delighted to once again run their Winter Farm Walks Open Day.
On Sunday 8th February the farm and bakery doors will once again be open to the public. Open 10am till 3pm there will be guided wildlife walks at intervals throughout the day led by experts from the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust (walks pre-book only - see website for details). Walks will run at 10am, 11:15am and 1:30pm - there is no charge for the walks. Approximately 1 hour long these walks are an ideal way to enjoy the countryside in beautiful rural East Yorkshire.
The farm woodland walks will be open for anyone wanting to do a shorter walk at their leisure.
Jessica Ledger from the Side Oven Bakery commented: “we are delighted to once again run our very popular Winter Wildlife Walks in partnership with the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. Our open days are gaining in popularity each year which just goes to show how much people enjoy coming and seeing how we farm organically and seeing firsthand how much of a positive impact it has on the Wildlife here.”
'Wassail'
Back by popular demand, they will also be welcoming back the Makara Morris group who are based at Wansford. The group of 6 dancers will be performing a 'Wassail.' A Wassail is the blessing of the fruit trees in hope of a bountiful harvest in Autumn. Wassail is Anglo Saxon from Old Norse ‘ves heill’ meaning ‘be in good health’.
The Wassail happens at the beginning of the New Year with a gathering of local people who follow the ‘King/Queen in the green’, in a noisy procession to the orchard. To wake up the trees and ward off evil spirits, people bang, stamp, sing/shout wassail rhymes making as much noise as possible. Pieces of toast soaked in a large bowl of cider/fruit juice and are hung in the branches to attract robins to the trees as these are said to be the good spirits of the orchard.
The Wassail will be performed around Midday on the 8th February and everyone will be welcomed to watch this event.
Bakery
The bakery will be open 10am till 3pm for a wide range of freshly baked Breads, Croissant, Cakes and hot takeaway refreshments.
Pre-orders for baked items are advisable to avoid disappointment.
