Wheelie exciting events planned for Tour of Britain start and finish

There are just a few days until the Tour of Britain comes to the East Riding, and it is promising to be an unforgettable experience.

Stage three of the race, The Howdens Stage: Goole to Beverley, will take place on Tuesday, 5 September, and in addition to the thrill of the race, there will be plenty of fun free activities to make it an action-packed day out for all the family.

Working with local partners, East Riding of Yorkshire Council has put together a programme of exciting events both at the start of the race in Goole and at the finish in Beverley.

The race starts at 11.30am in Goole’s central precinct on Boothferry Road, but the fun starts much earlier, with street entertainers and circus workshops, including stilt walking, juggling and unicycling, from around 9.30am.

A little way along the route, nearby West Park will host a celebration of all things cycling, from 10am to 2.30pm. Organised by the council’s Active Communities team, it will include bike repair and maintenance workshops, cycle training, and the chance to hop on one of a range of different bikes and explore the park’s cycle path.

The West Park event will be held near the park’s entrance on Airmyn Road, and people will be able to see the Tour of Britain peloton speed past shortly after the race starts at 11.30am.

Over at the finish line on Beverley Westwood, there will be a race village filled with high-energy, cycling-themed entertainment for all the family.

The fun starts at noon and attractions will include a BMX air stunt show, a pump track, a freestyle airbag, and KMX Karts. Bikes and helmets will be available to borrow for those who do not have their own.

Anyone looking for something a little different can try out the “pedal-powered arcade”, featuring a bubble frog, Scalextric track and smoothie maker, all powered by cyclists pedalling on static bikes.

Councillor Anne Handley, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “The Tour of Britain is almost upon us and we’re all so excited to bring this huge event to our region.

“We’ve got some great events going on at the start and finish, and many towns and villages along the tour are planning their own celebrations and decorations, so there’s plenty of opportunities for people to get involved.

“I know the people of Goole, Beverley and across the East Riding will be out in force to make this a fantastic event.”

Parking and access

Goole

Estcourt Street Car Park will be closed from 6pm on Monday until 6pm on Tuesday. To make up for this loss of parking, the one-hour parking limit will be lifted on Carlisle Steet.

Other car parks will remain open, but please be aware of any road closures.

Anyone bringing a bike is asked not to bring it on to the central precinct, as large crowds are expected.

Beverley

People are advised to travel by public transport or park in Beverley town centre and walk to Beverley Westwood. There will be no general vehicle access or parking at the race village.

Disabled parking will be available via the horsebox entrance (blue marker in the below map) at the racecourse from 12noon. People are advised to arrive as early as possible. All disabled vehicle access will be via Killingwoldgraves Roundabout (red marker below).
