The Kings Head Launch New Winter Menu
Mon 25th November 2019The King's Head, situated in one corner of Beverley's historic Saturday Market place is ideally located to welcome you in from the cold, after braving the Westwood or perhaps just enjoying a stroll around town.
On arrival, whether for a pre-meal drink or a three course meal, expect a warm, friendly greeting. Our party of four sat at a window table in comfortable, spacious surroundings and enjoyed the views over Saturday Market as we ordered drinks and read the new Winter Menu. With many new dishes on offer, we were grateful for the very polite and helpful staff on hand to answer our questions.
Before enjoying any starters, we ordered and shared some nibbles - charred sourdough, hummus, olive oil, balsamic vinegar (ve) along with Halloumi fries, spring onions and Gotcha mayo (v). As we tucked in it quickly became apparent that our taste buds were going to be taken to another level; the Halloumi fries were a delight, so much so that more were ordered. With so much choice on the starter menu, we decided sharers were the way forward and our choice was proven right. The Baked British Camembert with honey & thyme, red onion & balsamic jam and charred sourdough (v) was cooked wonderfully and together with the charred sourdough made the perfect combination. Our starter set us up beautifully for the main course to come.
For the main course, we each made a different choice and as is always the case, you wonder individually whether you have chosen well. Again, it seems we came up trumps! Between us we ordered the bacon & cheese burger, which with the Butler’s Mature Cheddar had a great little twist the fillet of pork wellington, mouthwateringly cooked with a slightly pink centre the kale caesar salad with grilled chicken which had a variety of flavours that encouraged just another mouthful and the lemon & thyme roasted chicken breast. The chicken breast served with clotted cream mash demonstrated that the King's Head were happy to mix things up a little for customer satisfaction, as originally this meal should have been accompanied by sautéed new potatoes. Each of the dishes, served by Kora our waitress, were well presented and the clean plates at the end of the meal did justice to the dishes we enjoyed.
At this point, not everyone at the table had room for a desert, so the helpful staff suggested we thought about a sharer - just enough to enjoy, but not too much to push you over the edge. The sharer dessert consisted of apple crumble tart with clotted cream & vanilla custard; gooey chocolate brownie with chocolate mousse, caramel sauce & honeycomb and baked lemon curd cheesecake with clotted cream & custard sauce. As you might guess each individual at the table had a different favourite. Served with a small jug of custard the apple crumble sneaked in to top spot, very closely followed by the baked lemon curd cheesecake with clotted cream. The subtle flavours of these finished the meal off to perfection. That said, the younger guests at the table were overjoyed with the chocolate brownie, which can sometimes can be too chocolatey, but in this instance the balance was just right.
As we sat and enjoyed our after dinner drinks and reflected on our fine dining experience that was the Winter Menu, we checked our diaries to decide when it would be convenient to return and experience further the delights of the wide range of options on offer. If this is winter then may it be a long one!
