Story of wealthy trawlerman Jack Lear to open at Hull Truck Theatre on Thursday 17 January

A stormy production set on the banks of the River Humber will open at Hull Truck Theatre this Thursday, 17 January.
Following the immensely successful production of Richard III as part of Hull UK City of Culture 2017, Hull-born Barrie Rutter OBE returns to Hull Truck Theatre as leading actor and director of Jack Lear. Written by Ben Benison, the play, which was first staged 10 years ago in Scarborough, will be given a new, exciting twist.
Jack Lear is a reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s King Lear that pays tribute to Hull’s trawling legacy while presenting universal themes such as love, betrayal, and family disputes. The production tells the story of Jack Lear, a wealthy trawlerman who is preparing to retire and hand over his fortune to his daughters, Morgana, Freda and Victoria. The sisters, who have never seen eye to eye with each other, or their tight-fisted father, scheme and scrap over their inheritance. The situation becomes even more tense as Edmund, a womanising Solicitor, enters their lives.
Barrie Rutter will be joined by Nicola Sanderson, Sarah Naughton, Olivia Onyehara, and Andy Cryer in this intense, thrilling story that will unfold against a background of a cappella folk music composed by Yorkshire-born folk icon Eliza Carthy MBE.
Jack Lear will run at Hull Truck Theatre from Thursday 17 January until Saturday 2 February. The production will then transfer to Northern Stage in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne for a four-night run (12 – 16 February).
