Peter Snow and Ann Macmillan coming to Beverley this week : Heroism and humanity in the hands of two top journalists

Peter Snow and Ann MacMillan are familiar and popular names in journalism.  Their careers have ranged across ITN, BBC’s Newsnight, Global TV and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.  Held in esteem and affection, they have seen and covered much between them and garnered many unexpected insights.

Now they discuss courage, cunning and compassion in the turbulence of war as they bring together the stories of thirty-four individuals, many untold until now. And they are coming to Lit Up Festivalon Friday 20 October.   

Come and listen to their unique account of ordinary men and women who rose to the challenge of war with acts of great heroism and humanity: logic-defying reactions of individuals who have pushed the boundaries of love, bravery, suffering and terror beyond the imaginable.

Peter’s and Ann’s is an engaging and diverse scope and the tales they will recount include:

the courage of Edward Seagar who survived the Charge of the Light Brigade
the cunning of Krystyna Skarbek, quick-thinking spy and saboteur during the Second World War
the skullduggery of Benedict Arnold, who switched sides in the American War of Independence
the compassion of Magdalene de Lancey who tenderly nursed her dying husband at Waterloo
the incredible escape of John Bukleley and a handful of the crew of a Royal Navy warship wrecked on the wild coast of Chile
most recently: Ahmad Terkawi, a Syrian chemist who managed to escape from Homs with his family and survived a terrifying journey on foot, boat and bus to arrive in Sweden in 2015

In an international climate of uncertainty and unpleasantness, husband and wife will together bring inspiration and humanity as they recount these true stories of love and bravery spanning four centuries and four continents.  These stories are of people caught up in the most extreme ordeal humans have to endure: their experiences are the stuff of legend.

Peter, man of the most booming voice in history, was once foreign correspondent and anchoredNewsnight for many years; whether you remember him from ITN News or Tomorrow’s World, his jovial enthusiasm is infectious - after all, it famously brought general elections to life, with help of his swingometer.  Ann is the great granddaughter of David Lloyd George, and worked for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation until 2013.
