New later bus service for villagers in Cherry Burton and Etton

A bus company is to launch a new later service to help two villages near Beverley following a request from residents.

Villagers in Cherry Burton appealed to councils and bus operators to provide a later service back from Beverley on weekdays, as the last bus currently departs from the town at 3.35pm during school term times, and 3pm during school holidays.

The issue was raised when Cherry Burton Parish Council, with help from East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s transportation services team, held a public meeting to discuss public transport matters and invited representatives from local bus operators serving the village.

As a result of the meeting, Acklams Coaches, which is based in Beverley, has agreed to divert one of its existing buses to provide a later journey to Cherry Burton and Etton from Beverley.

The new service will begin Monday 4 September and will run from Monday to Friday, departing from Beverley Sow Hill Bus Station at 5.10pm during school term times.

If it proves successful, Acklams Coaches has indicated there may be a possibility of extending the service to run all year round from Monday to Saturday.

The new service will benefit Cherry Burton and Etton villagers working and shopping in Beverley, as well as village pupils attending schools in Beverley or taking part in after-school activities.

Councillor John Barrett, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s portofolio holder for operational services, said: “This is an excellent result and it shows the value of the council’s approach in linking parish councils directly with bus operators through the creation of a network of Parish Transport Champions.”

Steve Peirson, vice chairman of Cherry Burton Parish Council said: “We are really pleased that Acklams Coaches have responded so positively to our residents’ request.

“We will help to promote the new service locally, and hopefully it will prove popular.”
