New exhibition - 'Edith Farmiloe : The Children of the Poor' - opens on Saturday at the Treasure House, Beverley

Wed 3rd May 2017
A Make Believe Margate By E Farmiloe

This touring exhibition, from the Heath Robinson Trust, showcases the delightful illustrations of author and artist Edith Farmiloe.

The wife of a vicar, between 1895 and 1909 Edith wrote about and illustrated the lives of children in her husband’s parishes – first in Soho and later in South Hackney.  Self-taught, Edith had a natural affinity with the world of children and childhood emotions.  Some of the illustrations are humorous, some slightly sinister.  Some, such as the illustrations for the book Young George, show how challenging and precarious life could be for children from poor families.

The illustrations and books are kindly on loan from the family of Edith Farmiloe whilst supporting objects, such as clothes, shoes and children’s toys are from the East Riding Museums Service social history collection.

The exhibition opens this Saturday (6 May) and runs until 8 July.
