Waste and recycling officers will be out and about in the East Riding to mark this year’s national Recycle Week.
The officers from East Riding of Yorkshire Council will be visiting various venues during the event to promote the recycling of food waste and offering advice and information to help local residents.
National Recycle Week 2026 runs from Monday 14 to Sunday 20 September, and aims to encourage everyone to recycle more of the right things, more often.
The waste and recycling officers will be visiting:
· Pocklington market on Tuesday 15 September, 9am - 3pm.
· Bridlington Hinge Centre, Quay Road, on Wednesday 16 September, 1.30pm-3pm.
· Driffield Library and Customer Service Centre, Cross Hill, on Thursday 17 September, 9.30am-3pm,
· Hornsea Hub, Broadway, on Friday 18 September 10am-3pm
The officers want to encourage and help people to recycle more of their food waste.
Residents in the East Riding are being praised for an increase in food recycling and for their support of weekly brown bin collections.
Since weekly brown bin collections began for two-thirds of the East Riding in February, the council has delivered almost 9,000 kitchen caddies to people wanting to start recycling their food, who didn't before.
But still thousands of tonnes of food are ending up in green bins every year because it is being thrown away still in its packaging.
East Riding data shows around 20% of all the rubbish going into green bins is food waste – that's 10,300 tonnes of food not being recycled each year.
So residents are being asked to do one simple thing – get rid of the wrapping and recycle the food.
Empty that lettuce from its bag, remove the film from old cucumbers and take the plastic off tomatoes. Put the waste food into your kitchen caddy and the packaging in your household bin.
Also empty out your leftover ready meals, beans and out-of-date yogurts into your caddies first, then their tubs, trays and metal cans can be quickly cleaned then recycled in blue bins.
Councillor Paul West, the council's cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "Please go along and visit our waste and recycling officers during the week because they can offer valuable advice about simple ways to recycle your food and all rubbish.
"East Riding residents do a fantastic job of recycling their waste, this area is still one of the best in the country for it, but we still need people to empty their food packaging and recycle that food. It all makes a difference."
Weekly brown bin collections are due to be rolled out to the remaining third of the East Riding – towns and villages in the Beverley, Cottingham, Willerby, Brough, Anlaby and Hessle areas – in February 2027.
Free kitchen caddy liners
Rolls of kitchen caddy liners are available free of charge at all council customer service centres, libraries, leisure centres, household waste recycling centres and adult learning centres.
