Inter-Village Potted Sports Competition
Mon 8th May 2017Fourteen teams across the East Riding have once again battled it out at the Inter-Village Games, held by East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Sport, Play & Arts Service, at East Riding Leisure Beverley.
The event is for groups that have previously had activity groups set up through attending the Sport, Play and Arts Service’s Let’s Get Moving programme.
The programme, which is funded by adult services, aims to encourage the over 50s and disabled adults to take part in fun activities, like soft bowls, seated aerobics and new age kurling, as a way of promoting independence, overcoming social isolation and increasing activity levels.
Sarah Johnson, sport and active communities officer at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “The Let’s Get Moving programme is just one of a number of schemes offered by the council’s sport, play and arts service at one of our many leisure centres across the East Riding with the aim of helping people to get active and stay active regardless of age or ability.
“The Inter-Village Games gives everyone who has been benefitting from the programme to come together and take part in what is a truly fun and friendly competition.”
After initially setting up the groups they have then received support with funding applications which has enabled them to become sustained and run independently.
The teams of four participants took part in seven different ‘timed’ potted sports activities such as netball shooting, archery and new age kurling and recorded their scores for each one.
The winning team was the ‘Mac Pack’, from Haltemprice, which has now won the competition three years running.
Second place was awarded to Hutton Cranswick and in third place were the ‘Netball Nutters’.
Sarah added: “Everyone who took part in the Inter-Village Games really enjoyed it and we’ve had some really positive feedback from the event.
“It is always a fiercely competitive event but one that is a lot of fun and incredibly rewarding to watch and be a part of.”
