Hull Truck Theatre announce The Railway Children as their Christmas Production for 2020
Thu 5th December 2019Hull Truck Theatre are bringing E. Nesbit’s classic story to the stage for Christmas 2020. Tickets for The Railway Children has gone on public sale today.
This adaptation by Mike Kenny started off at the National Railway Museum in York where it ran in 2008 and 2009. The show then transferred to Waterloo International Railway Station where it ran for two seasons on the out of use platforms – this production earned the show a 2011 Olivier Award for Best Entertainment. Following that, it has had subsequent global outings, including a run in Toronto at Roundhouse Park in a purpose-built venue around railway tracks. The show also re-opened in London in December 2014 in the purpose-built Kings Cross Theatre, where it ran until January 2017.
Our production will be directed by Hull Truck Theatre’s Artistic Director Mark Babych, who was Associate Director when it ran at London’s Waterloo Station. For 2020, Writer Mike Kenny will be revisiting his award-winning adaptation to include original songs and music, which have become a staple of Hull Truck Theatre’s festive shows. Hull audiences have enjoyed previous Christmas shows by Mike Kenny, including Cinderella (2014) and Sleeping Beauty (2015).

Quotes
Mike Kenny, Playwright of The Railway Children, said: “I’ve been so lucky to be associated with this story. I can’t think of a book that deals, almost totally, with a family of children doing the right thing, without it being boring or pious. I never tire of it, it always makes me laugh, inspires me and brings a lump to my throat. This time, for Hull Truck Theatre, we are working on including the songs that Truck’s Christmas shows do so well... I can’t wait.”
Mark Babych, Artistic Director at Hull Truck Theatre, said: “As a director, it feels amazing to return to this story and bring it to the people of Hull. The Railway Children is such a classic story, bringing with it a pinch of nostalgia for those who grew up with it and also sharing this wonderful story with a new generation of theatre-goers. Christmas is a special time for bringing together families and friends and it’s a pleasure to be able to share more theatrical magic at this time next year.”
Casting is yet to be announced.
