Help That Could Make Home Life More Affordable

Many households in the East Riding are missing out on financial help that could reduce their council tax bill. Residents who are on a low income, are receiving benefits, working part-time, are self-employed, or have recently experienced a change in circumstances, may be entitled to council tax support.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council can support residents who are affected by the rising cost of living with council tax support, designed to help those who are struggling to pay their council tax. The amount of support available depends on individual circumstances, including income, savings, household arrangement, and whether a person receives any other benefits. Someone who owns their home and/or are working, may still qualify for assistance.

Applying is straightforward and could help reduce the monthly outgoings of those affected. To find out more and apply, visit: Council tax support

More support and advice are available through the Crisis and Resilience Fund (CRF), a government scheme that helps people on low incomes who have sudden money problems. Crisis payments provide short-term help for residents facing an emergency such as a sudden loss of income, an unexpected bill or a situation that makes it difficult to meet essential day-to-day needs.

Housing payments provide short term financial support for residents who receive housing benefit or the housing element from Universal Credit and need support with housing costs. These payments can help prevent issues such as rent arrears, moving costs and help people to stay in their home.

Financial support to help people improve their money situation can include benefit advice, budgeting support, money management advice and help to manage money better in the future. For more information, see: Crisis and Resilience Fund

Councillor Nigel Wilkinson, Cabinet Member for Finance and Governance at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: ‘’We know that many households are continuing to feel the pressure of rising living costs, and some residents may not realise that help is available. This support can make a real difference to household budgets, whether you are working, self-employed, receiving benefits, or have recently experienced a change in circumstances.

‘’I would encourage anyone who is struggling financially to check the support they are entitled to and take advantage of the additional help available.’’
