Ex-College student returns as guest at Beverley Food Festival
Tue 2nd October 2018East Riding College is welcoming back ex-student Peter Sidwell as he returns to Beverley to open the Beverley Food Festival as its special guest.
Pocklington-born Peter, who studied at the College when it was still Beverley College, is now a TV chef and presenter of the Channel 4 cookery show Lakes on a Plate. He is also well known as the author of the Simply Good Food range of cookbooks and runs a restaurant and cookery school in the Lake District.
A favourite at food festivals around the country, Peter will be returning to his Yorkshire roots in the hope of inspiring young chefs now studying at the College, who will be helping out in the prep station to keep the cooking demonstrations running smoothly at the festival.
A recent graduate of the College Helen Mayoh from Beverley is also competing in the Copper Pan Cooking Competition on Sunday. Helen works at AAK UK in food development and recently completed a level 3 diploma in professional cookery.
As one of the Festival’s sponsors, East Riding College also has a stall at the event to promote its new Pop Up restaurant scheme. Elwell’s, the College’s restaurant and training kitchen at Flemingate can be hired on evenings or weekends to be used by chefs as a pop-up restaurant.
Barbara Collinson, Director of Human Resources, Facilities and SHE at the College said, “Our pop up opportunities give chef entrepreneurs the chance to make a name for themselves in Beverley’s thriving food industry. The restaurant and training kitchen can be hired for one off special events or a regular slot. The advantage for up and coming chefs is that there are no long-term overheads and it’s a relatively low risk approach to testing out new menus and building up a reputation.”
