East Riding schoolchildren take part in second Schools' Yorkshire Tour Baton Relay

Pupils from nine schools will be taking to their bikes to help relay a baton across the East Riding as part of the second Schools’ Yorkshire Tour.
The Schools’ Yorkshire Tour is a large-scale cycling event linking primary, secondary, special schools and clubs across the whole of Yorkshire. It will start in Pickering, North Yorkshire, on Monday June 5 and finishes in Leeds on Tuesday July 3, celebrating national Bike Week during the event.
The baton will be ceremonially handed over to the East Riding on Wednesday June 6 at Flamborough Primary School, at 2.45pm, and will travel 70 miles (112 kilometres) through the East Riding on Thursday and Friday June 7 and 8.

Pupils from St Mary & St Joseph Primary School in Pocklington will officially hand the baton over to children from Dunnington CE Primary School at the Stamford Bridge viaduct at around 2.15pm on the second day, when it leaves the East Riding.
Councillor Margaret Chadwick, chairman of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, will attend the ceremonial handover of the baton to Flamborough Primary School.
Councillor Chadwick said: “The Schools’ Yorkshire Tour is an excellent initiative, of which this council is proud to be a part. The first event last year was a great success and I hope that this year’s event is equally as successful.”
Councillor Julie Abraham, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s portfolio holder for children, young people and education, said: “The popularity of cycling in the East Riding continues to grow thanks, in part, to hosting events such as the Tour de Yorkshire.
“Encouraging children and young people to get out and about on their bikes is important and the council’s road safety officers will support those taking part in the Schools’ Yorkshire Tour, with the aim of fostering a passion for cycling as both a leisure activity and as a sustainable form of transport.”
Steve Wigley, road safety officer, who is organising the two day event in the East Riding, said: “After the massive success of last year, we are very proud once again to be part of this incredible award-winning event, bringing together children and cycling groups from all four corners of Yorkshire and working in partnership with all the other local authorities and city councils.
“We hope to again inspire and encourage more children and their families to take to two wheels this summer not only for leisure and explore what the East Riding has to offer, but also as a means of travelling to school on a daily basis. In this year’s Schools’ Yorkshire Tour, we have even more children and schools involved and have increased our baton leg to two full days, which we are very excited about.”
The Schools’ Yorkshire Tour will pass through 12 local authority areas, including North Yorkshire, East Riding, York, Doncaster, Rotherham, Sheffield, Barnsley, Wakefield, Kirklees, Bradford and Calderdale before finishing in Leeds, after visiting 162 schools and covering 400miles (640km).
