East Riding of Yorkshire Council 2020 Chairman's Awards winners announced

CHAIRMAN’S AWARDS – 2020 WINNERS

The winners of the 2020 East Riding of Yorkshire Council Chairman’s Awards have been revealed in a digital ceremony.

The annual event celebrates individuals, businesses, building projects and community groups which have made a significant contribution to improving life in the East Riding.

Bridlington Spa usually hosts the ceremony, but because of the COVID-19 restrictions, this year’s winners were crowned during a virtual event which was shown live on the council’s social media channels.

Council chairman Councillor Pat Smith was joined by BBC Look North’s Clare Frisby to announce who had taken the honours from a strong set of shortlists, made up of nominations from members of the public.

Councillor Smith said: “Although the event had to be online, I can assure you that it remains one of the most important annual occasions in the council’s diary, and for me personally as well.

“The event is our chance to thank and to honour those people all across the East Riding – businesses and organisations large and small - who contribute a huge amount, and often go the extra mile, to promote the area as a great place in which to work and to live.

“During my term of office as chairman, it is a constant source of pleasure and pride for me to see all those people who work so hard within their local communities to make the East Riding the very special place we all know it to be.”

“These awards continue to reflect the unique community spirit of our local area, and the efforts made by so many.”

BUSINESS AWARD – 50 AND UNDER EMPLOYEES

JOINT WINNERS – CAB Executive Travel and Subli Metals, Mappleton

CAB Executive Travel, Goole

CAB Executive Travel was established 20 years ago with one coach and one driver, it now has five luxury coaches offering holidays across the UK and Europe. It also has local groups who regularly travel and the tours are tailored to meet their needs.

The family-run business has raised thousands of pounds for Yorkshire Cancer Research. It also supports smaller charities and sponsors local schools.

Subli Metals, Mappleton

Subli Metals is a family business which has grown from a couple who wanted to be self-employed to a thriving business employing seven local people. It specialises in aluminium sublimation blanks, from bookmarks to clocks, from sheet stock to door plaques.

The business has helped local mums get back into work and is flexible, so working hours fit around school times. Employees are given the training they need to undertake this skilled work.

BUILT HERITAGE AWARD - NEW DWELLINGS, CONVERSIONS, AND MINOR WORKS CATEGORY

WINNER – 9 Vicar Lane, Howden

Tucked away along the historic streets of Howden, 9 Vicar Lane has been sensitively restored and put to a new retail use. The old garage door and plastic shop fittings have been removed and in their place new timber shop fronts, doors and signage have been installed. The end result, along with the characterful windows displays, is an enhancement to this early 19th century building and Howden Conservation Area.

BUILT HERITAGE AWARD - COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENTS AND MAJOR SCHEMES CATEGORY

WINNER – The Point, Beverley

The Point, located in Beverley, is a former 18th century warehouse attached to Grade II-listed buildings the ‘Dispensary’ and ‘Holland House’. A major scheme of re-building and restoration has removed all of the later internal additions to the warehouse, resulting in an open plan meeting area and food outlet.

Externally, the original finish of the warehouse has been revealed and the listed buildings have been sensitively re-painted. Now structurally secure the highlight of the interior of The Point is its newly exposed and rebuilt king post roof.

SPORT – TEAM / CLUB CATEGORY

WINNER - Driffield RUFC Ladies Team

Driffield RUFC Ladies Team started just over three years ago with the support of Driffield RUFC. Starting with a small number of local women keen to learn to play rugby, the team has gone from strength to strength over the last three seasons.

The team entered RFU’s National Challenge 2 North East League with other teams from across Yorkshire and the North East, and the ladies finished third in the table.

SPORT – TALENTED PERFORMER CATEGORY

WINNER - Emily Asquith, Bridlington

Emily has been boxing for five years, trains four nights a week and undertakes sessions before school. She trains with the England team on a monthly basis and is a member of the excel squad.

She was called to attend an emerging talent squad for the GB Squad and she is the youngest person England have selected for this type of training. Emily has achieved a lot this year including European Youth Gold Medal and won gold at the Sombor Nations Box Cup.

COMMUNITY – GROUP

WINNER – Hessle Epilepsy Society

Hessle Epilepsy Society and the Hessle Epilepsy shop were both formed and opened in 1990. They were started by Dawn Bullock and Diane Wharram, as this is a cause close to their hearts. For more than 30 years, they have worked tirelessly to raise funds and awareness of epilepsy.

They have raised almost £400,000 to buy essential equipment for Castle Hill and Hull Royal Infirmary hospitals and local schools and have funded a specialist epilepsy nurse who people can refer directly to for advice and help.

COMMUNITY – INDIVIDUAL

WINNER - Darren Baker, Driffield

When he was 17 years old, Darren suffered a severe head injury and was left disabled and in a wheelchair. Having always had a special affinity with Driffield, he felt he would like to give something back and decided he would like to improve Driffield Beck.

Although Darren is unable to do any physical work, he set up a team of volunteers and ‘Friends of the Beck’ was born. The active volunteers meet regularly in all weathers to clean the beck and to date have amassed well over 900 bags of rubbish.
