Driffield poultry worker wins farming award

The team at an East Yorkshire poultry rearing business is celebrating after a member of its team won a prestigious farming award.

Mel Jackson from Middleton on the Wolds business, Clive Soanes Broilers was presented with the Farm Worker of the Year award at the Farmers Weekly Awards that were held in London last week.

"I'm over the moon to win this award. Thank you to Farmers Weekly and to the judges. Thanks to Claire Wright for nominating me and to the team at Clive Soanes Broilers this one's for you - what a great team," said Ms Jackson.

The Farmworker of the Year award was sponsored by The Original Muck Boot Co. Darren Layard, vice-president, international markets, said: "Mel's perseverance and hard-working attitude shines bright. Her ingenuity alongside her dedication to animal welfare is truly inspiring, making Mel a very deserving winner of the Farmworker of the Year Award." 

The awards were presented at a black-tie dinner that was hosted by comedian Russell Kane. They are organised by Farmers Weekly and celebrate the very best of British agriculture by recognising hard-working and innovative farmers across the UK. 

Ms Jackson worked for Soanes Poultry for 30 years before joining Clive Soanes Broilers as  Poultry and Farms Supervisor in 2021. When she's not working, she enjoys upcycling furniture and gardening.

Clive Soanes Broilers has been rearing chicken since 1947. The chicken is processed and sold by sister company Soanes Poultry to butchers, independent retailers and restaurants in Yorkshire and wholesalers and catering butchers nationwide.
