Dignity Action Day 2017

East Riding residents receiving care and support, and those working in the health and social care sector, will be helping to raise awareness of dignity in care this week as part of a national campaign.
Dignity Action Day, which takes place on Wednesday 1 February, is an annual opportunity for everyone to play their part in upholding people’s rights to dignity and provide a truly memorable day for those who use care services.
In 2015/16 over 21,000 people living in the East Riding were assessed by the council for care and support needs, while the council currently employs over 1,000 people in the health and social care sector.
There are around 3,700 registered carers, and an estimated 38,000 unregistered carers, living in the East Riding.
Richard Harrap, portfolio holder for adult and carer services, said: “The East Riding of Yorkshire Council is proud to support Dignity Action Day.
“Everyone, regardless of age or disability, should be treated with the dignity and respect that they deserve and this campaign is the perfect opportunity to show that.
“It is a chance for everyone, whether they are employed in the care sector, caring for a loved one, or are a member of the public, to do their bit to help promote dignity in care and I would encourage as many people as possible to get involved.”
Dignity Action Day is part of the Dignity in Care campaign which aims to put dignity and respect at the heart of UK care services and in the hearts, minds and actions of the public.
The national campaign has over 70,000 registered Dignity Champions who have pledged to challenge poor care, to act as good role models, and through specific guidelines issued by the campaign, to educate and inform all those working around them.
On and around 1 February adults who access East Riding Day Services will be getting involved in a range of events, including afternoon ‘Digni-teas’, games, quizzes and craft activities to celebrate the day, while staff will be playing their part in raising awareness of the campaign.
