Catch The New Weekend Bus To Explore The Yorkshire Wolds

More visitors can now experience the villages and landscapes of the Yorkshire Wolds thanks to a newly-launched bus service.

Passengers have been enjoying weekend journeys on the Wolds Explorer since it began running at Easter, with the aim of encouraging more people to visit one of the most attractive areas of the East Riding and support local businesses.

The area covered by the bus is especially popular with walkers and ramblers, who like to get out into the countryside and enjoy everything it offers.

The new Service 200 bus has been developed and funded by East Riding of Yorkshire Council using Government funding it was awarded from the Department for Transport for Bus Service Improvement.

Operated by East Yorkshire buses, the Wolds Explorer now runs on Saturdays, Sundays, and Bank Holidays until the end of September, between Pocklington and Thixendale, serving the villages of Millington, Huggate and Fridaythorpe along its route.

And thanks to the current bus fare cap, a single ticket for those just using the Wolds Explorer costs £2 for the whole route, or a £1 local fare.

Harriet Morgan, landlady of The Gait Inn in Millington, said: “We think the new bus service that passes through Millington is a great idea.

“We have already had customers in the pub using the bus, some have walked from Huggate, stopped for a drink and then got the bus home and others have got the bus from Millington up to Thixendale for a walk.

“Our teenage daughter has also used the bus every Saturday to get to Pocklington to meet her friends which has given her a bit of freedom. We hope the bus service is here to stay!”

Councillor Paul West, cabinet member for environment and transport at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “The whole reason for this bus service was to make it easier for people to reach these attractive and vibrant Yorkshire Wolds villages.

“I’m really pleased this bus is being well used and is already helping local businesses. It’s also a much cheaper and more environmentally-friendly way to travel.”

With three services a day on Saturdays and two services a day on Sundays and Bank Holidays in each direction, there is plenty of scope for passengers to take a walk through the Wolds Way National Trail, and enjoy a meal and a drink at pubs and cafes in the villages served.

The Wolds Explorer offers connections with services X46/X47 from York and Hull, and a full day out in the Yorkshire Wolds can be accessed from anywhere along the frequent X46/X47 bus routes. Show your X46/X47 £2 single ticket and travel free on the Wolds Explorer.
