Young theatre-makers from Hull and East Yorkshire are being encouraged to seize a life-changing opportunity, with applications now open for The Godber Theatre Foundation's next intake.
The Foundation is now accepting applications from students studying degree-level Drama, Acting and/or Theatre Arts, with the deadline set for Thursday 13 August at 12pm.
Each year, up to ten talented students from Hull and East Yorkshire are selected to join the Foundation, receiving support that goes far beyond financial assistance. Successful applicants become part of a thriving creative community, gaining access to industry mentoring, professional masterclasses, workshops, networking opportunities, behind-the-scenes experiences and career guidance designed to help bridge the gap between training and the professional theatre industry.
Founded to champion emerging talent from the region, The Godber Theatre Foundation exists to ensure that talented young creatives—particularly those from working-class backgrounds—have access to opportunities that can often feel out of reach.
Since launching in 2020, the Foundation has helped dozens of young artists take their first professional steps. Alumni have gone on to secure work with organisations including the John Godber Company, Hull Truck Theatre, Middle Child, Cast Theatre, Bradford City of Culture, Glyndebourne and the West End. Former Foundation members have also gained professional representation, secured postgraduate training, worked on national productions and built successful careers across acting, design, stage management, production and playwriting.
Alongside one-to-one mentoring, Foundation recipients can apply for funding towards essential career costs including headshots, Spotlight membership, scripts and professional development, while also benefiting from exclusive invitations to rehearsals, performances and industry events. Many Foundation members have also secured their first paid professional roles through the John Godber Company.
Who can apply?
Applications are open to students who:

Are originally from Hull or East Yorkshire

Are studying (or have accepted a place to study) a degree-level course in Drama, Acting or Theatre Arts, including acting, stage management, technical theatre, design, costume or playwriting.
Applicants are asked to submit a short written statement or two-minute video explaining why they would benefit from the Foundation, alongside a performance monologue or creative portfolio depending on their discipline. Shortlisted applicants will then be invited to a second-round Zoom interview. Selection is based on both talent and the potential impact the Foundation could have on the individual's future career.
The Foundation is backed by decades of experience from the John Godber Company and is supported by patron Andrew Lincoln, who has spoken passionately about the importance of nurturing young talent from Hull and East Yorkshire.
