A Fabulous Weekend Of Music And Family Fun In Beverley

This May, Beverley & East Riding Early Music Festival returned for its annual celebration of the town’s musical history with an action-packed weekend of world-class music and a very special workshop for families.

The Festival was delighted to welcome the chairman of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Councillor Liam Dealtry ,who officially opened the festival before attending the headline concert in St Mary’s Church with early music ensemble Florilegium and Saltburn- born soprano Rowan Pierce.

On Saturday, the BBC New Generation Baroque Ensemble and festival artists in residence, Ensemble Augelletti, invited families to “Pick a Card” at  a music workshop based around Georgian playing cards. Not only did families enjoy some fabulous music, but they were also able to design their own playing cards which were displayed in a beautiful mini gallery after the performance.

As always the festival took advantage of the town’s glorious churches, the perfect setting for early music

This year two concerts were performed in the resplendent surroundings of the Minster, featuring music from the award-winning vocal ensemble Stile Antico and Contre le Temps from France.

Other concerts took place in Toll Gavel United Church, St John of Beverley Catholic Church and  Beverley Memorial Hall. Last but not least, music (and beer)  fans were treated to an afternoon in the famous Monk’s Walk Public House with songs and tales from the unstoppable Ensemble Augelletti.

Festival director, Delma Tomlin, DUniv, MBE said:

“Beverley & East Riding Early Music Festival is always one of the highlights in our calendar and once again we received the warmest of welcomes in this beautiful town. I’d like to say a huge thank you to East Riding of Yorkshire Council for their continued support in helping us to bring the festival to life each year and to the Georgian Society of East Yorkshire for their invaluable expertise.”
