3 way tie in dramatic finish in the 2019 Brough Classic Pro am
Wed 12th June 2019Brough Golf Club held the 40th Brough Classic Pro-am on 3rd & 4th June, which attracted a field of 30 of the region’s top Golf Professionals joined by their amateur team mates.
The course was presented in fine condition and proved to be a very tough test of golf for both Pros and amateurs alike.
Abbeydale`s Gareth Davies opened up a 3 shot lead after round 1 with a fantastic 3 under par 65. Ryan O`Neil and Richard Law were well placed on level par, with Matt Daley and Alex Belt ready to make a charge on day 2 after a first round 69.
It was Team Logo World, made up of Andy Battams, Jason Pitter, Chris Leatham and Professional Rob Bundy that stormed ahead, with a superb score of 121 (-15) on day one. Their nearest challenger being Team Informa on 127 (-9).
Day two was played in challenging conditions, with stronger winds and rain for the groups playing at the end of the field.
Early pacesetter Gareth Davies found the back 9 difficult, posting a second round 73 (+5) to leave him on 138 (+2) for the tournament, which was still a competitive total and one that would be leader in the clubhouse for some time.
It was difficult to predict a winner at the mid-way stage, however a fine second round of 63 (-5) from Outlane Golf Clubs Robert Booth put him at the top of the leader board in the club house on 137 (+1). He was also joined by Burstwicks young pro Matt Daley. Daley adding a second round 68 to his first round 69 for a total of 137 (+1), helped by a blistering 3 under par back nine of 32 on the last day in tough conditions.
Meanwhile out on the course, Darren Leng (Far Grange GC) was making his move. Leng, who knows Brough like the back of his hand, used all his experience and skill to get to 1 under for the tournament with 4 holes to play, giving him a 2 shot lead. However the extremely tough finish at Brough caught up with Leng, who dropped 2 shots and finished on 137 (+1) for the tournament following an excellent final round of 67.
That meant the title was shared 3 ways, with Rob Booth, Matt Daley and Darren Leng all tied first on 137.
Team Logo World were there to be shot at on day 2, and some questioned whether the pressure of being overnight leaders would get to them?
A slow start to round 2 meant that others could pull shots back and start to make a challenge. Humberside Excavations and Pennamed Ltd both posted excellent 2nd round scores of -13 (123) in an attempt to throw Logo World off the top. However Logo world steadied the ship, and ultimately their first round lead was too big for anyone to catch. Posting a final score of 251 (-21) they ran out winners by 2 shots from Humberside Excavations.
“Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to everyone entered this year’s Brough Classic. The course was in excellent condition and there was some fine golf played over the two days” Richard Jagger General Manager Brough Golf Club
