Graham Stuart, MP for Beverley and Holderness, has welcomed the first wave of recruitment targets for police forces up and down the country – including Humberside Police.

Just shy of 100 police officers will be recruited by Humberside Police over the first year of the Government-backed drive, which is part of the Conservative Party’s commitment to increase the number of police officers by 20,000. By comparison, North Yorkshire Police will be able to recruit 58 officers.

In total, 6,000 extra police officers will be recruited by all 43 police forces across the country by the end of 2021.

Reacting to the news, Graham commented: “I know from hearing from my constituents the effect that crime can have on people’s lives, and getting more bobbies on the beat goes a long way to keeping people safe and sending out the message that crime and antisocial behaviour will not be tolerated.

“Having previously met with the Chief Inspector responsible for community policing in East Riding, and raising the issue of police numbers with him, I’m particularly pleased with this news.

“Not only this, but I’m delighted that the Government is giving the police more resources and powers so that they are well-equipped to protect themselves and others from harm.”

As part of a series of schemes aimed at tackling crime rates, including the Safer Streets Fund announced earlier this month, the Government has also announced a £10 million fund to equip more police with tasers, while plans have also been put in place to end the automatic release of the most violent offenders.

Graham said, “It’s now up to the Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner to act quickly to get these new officers on our streets as soon as possible, and I will push for Beverley and Holderness to see its share of the benefits of these additional police officers.”
