AyerDental Surgery is a busy NHS practice in Hull, caring for patients from all of East Yorkshire. As one of the main preventative based practices in the region it was pleased to be selected as one of the dental practices to deliver a new NHS scheme - STARTING WELL. This is a Smile4Life initiative – a dental practice-based programme with the aim to reduce oral health inequalities and improve oral health in children under 5 years old. The scheme focuses around prevention and encouraging visits to the dentist, preventative advice about reducing sugar intake and improving oral care including fluoride exposure to their teeth.

The principal, Chris Ayer, is also the main Sports Dentist in the region. He's official dentist to the Hull Pirates Ice Hockey, both Hull FC and Hull KR rugby league clubs and to the Hull City football squads.

Whilst sports dentistry includes restorative procedures following trauma, a far more important element is the preventative approach to dentistry, including screening and implementation of preventative measures- it is undesirable for a player to be unavailable for selection or even ‘out-of-form’ due to, for example, a toothache which may have been preventable.

On Thursday, during the school half-term holiday, the surgery held a Family Open Day organised by Head Nurse Sam Padley. Older children had the opportunity to explore the dental surgery to see what it’s like to be a dentist, younger children had an introduction to a dental surgery. The parents and children were able to discover the latest info in dental care.

Underlining the overlap between the preventative dental care for both the footballers and children, the practice was pleased to welcome Hull City forward Jarrod Bowen. He attended to offer his support to the Starting Well scheme, meet and greet the children and reinforce the importance of keeping a healthy smile.
