Mums and babies from across the East Riding are being invited to take part in events to highlight the benefits of breastfeeding.

Events will be held at a number of locations across the region on Friday 3 August, during World Breastfeeding Week, August 1 to 7 2018.

The events are part of the Global Big Latch On, a synchronised breastfeeding activity which will also be taking place at venues around the world.

Information and support to encourage breastfeeding is available from all 18 of the East Riding’s children’s centres, which are supporting the events.

In the East Riding, the Big Latch On will be taking place at the Flemingate shopping centre in Beverley (contact Beverley children’s centre on 01482 880066);  Princess Mary Promenade in Bridlington (Bridlington children’s centres 01262 409596/606053);  West Park in Goole (Goole children’s centres 01405 762614/761287);  the Lighthouse Gardens in Withernsea (Withernsea children’s centre 01964 612618);  and South Cave Leisure Centre (Brough children’s centre 01482 669474).

The events will be held on Friday 3 August from 10am to 11.30am.  Families are invited to go along to their chosen location at 10am, ready to latch on at 10.30am.

World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated in 120 countries.  The first Big Latch On took place in New Zealand in 2005 and it has since taken off globally.  This year the goal is to break the current record of 17,992 children breastfeeding at 758 locations, across 23 countries.

Councillor Julie Abraham,  East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s portfolio holder for children, young people and education, said she hoped that mothers will take the opportunity to take their babies and young children along to one of the events being held in the East Riding.

“The Big Latch On provides an opportunity for breastfeeding women to get together in their local communities, host their own events and identify opportunities for on-going support,” she said.

More information is available from East Riding children’s centres, or ring (01482) 880066.  For further details, visit www.biglatchon.org

In addition, pharmacies across the East Riding will be promoting breastfeeding to coincide with World Breastfeeding Week.

Anthony Bryce, health integration lead at Community Pharmacy Humber, said: “Each year Community Pharmacy takes part in six public health campaigns which involves the display and distribution of information and leaflets.

“The public health campaign for the month of August is Start4Life with a focus on breastfeeding, especially during World Breastfeeding Week.  If anybody wants any information, then please pop into your local pharmacy, where staff will be delighted to help and answer any questions that you may have.”
