The 25th Paul Roggeman European Open Beach Championships will take place this weekend, from Friday, 9 to Sunday, 11 February, with hundreds of anglers from the UK and from abroad taking part.

With an estimated prize fund of £35,000, demand for tickets has been high. Many have already bought in advance, but people can still buys tickets on the day from the event HQ at Sand le Mere Holiday Village.

The event starts with the Flattie Bash, held on Friday, 9 February, with registration at 8am at Hornsea Floral Hall. Fishing will then take place in zoned areas on Hornsea and Mappleton beaches.

On Saturday, 10 and Sunday, 11 February, the main competition takes place. Anglers can fish at a number of locations between the north end of North Marine Promenade, Bridlington, to the Pilot Jetty at Spurn Point.

Councillor Richard Burton, cabinet portfolio holder for leisure, tourism and culture, said: “The Paul Roggeman European Open Beach Championships is one of the most eagerly anticipated competitions on the angling calendar and has grown in popularity.

“The event has a truly international reputation, with competitors coming to take part from all over Europe, including Germany, Belgium and The Netherlands.

“As well as being an exciting three days of fishing, the event helps promote the East Riding as a tourist destination and benefits the local economy to the tune of almost half-a-million pounds.”
