Fairtrade Fortnight begins today, February 27th and continues until March 12.  The theme this year is 'It's Time To Put Fairtrade In Your Break'.

Much of our tea, coffee, sugar and chocolate is supplied by farmers who are trapped in a system which is unfair; they are not paid what they deserve for their labour. They often have no benefits such as sick pay, insurance or holiday entitlement. We get the benefits of their labour and use their products in our daily breaks and snacks, but they are trapped in a cycle of poverty. We need to stop this exploitation and this never ending cycle of exploitation.  One way is to support Fairtrade. All Fairtrade products guarantee that the price paid will cover the costs of production and give the farmers a living wage to look after their families with dignity, hope and a better future.

On Friday March 9th and Saturday March 10th the Beverley Fairtrade Group have the use of a  retail unit at Flemingate. Its location is opposite Starbucks and next to Poundland. The shop will be open each day from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m so visitors and shoppers can find out more about Fairtrade and the benefits to farmers. There will be a range of Fairtrade products to sell including tea, coffee, sugar and biscuits plus much more. Beverley is a Fair Trade Town so it seems natural to be able to promote Fair Trade during Fair Trade Fortnight.

Do head off down to Flemingate weekend after to see the range of fairly-traded products available!
