On Saturday, 01 April, Michael Wood marked his 20th year as East Riding of Yorkshire Town Crier. In celebration, Michael has been creative and turned his traditional tri-corn hat into a four-corn hat. This is to reflect the four corners of East Riding that he has covered over the last two decades in his ambassadorial role as the county crier.
Michael said: "Town Crier’s were the original news-giver and this new four-corn hat represents the compass points of North, East, West, South, from which the word 'NEWS' is historically derived by taking the first letter of each word."
Michael added: "Taking celebrations further, as a tribute to our county I wanted to integrate local symbols into its design. I decided to use the four sides of the hat to display a bale of straw for the countryside, a piece of rock candy for the coast, a miniature bell to reflect a town crier’s legendary attention-seeking-tool and finally what else but a Yorkshire rose.”
For decoration, Michael has included pheasant feathers for which he said with a smile: “Who doesn't ever want a feather in their cap!”
Michael was captured in his new headwear at TheCreativeLab in Beverley's Flemingate Centre.
