Tickets are available now for the East Riding Festival of Words, which will take place from Thursday, 18 October to Sunday, 22 October in Beverley and Bridlington.

The festival has had a full makeover, aiming to encourage everyone to come and embrace their love of words in all formats.

Highlights for the first day of the festival entitled Ready, Steady FEST! include local bestselling author, Wendy Mitchell who has shared her journey since her diagnosis with dementia at the age of 58, and an evening with bestselling author, Val Wood, in the beautiful Beverley Art Gallery.

The second day of the festival, at North Bridlington Library, ‘The Next Big Thing’, is a spotlight on some of the hottest new authors on the market, likely to be tomorrow’s bestsellers – an opportunity to hear about them first.

The ‘Dead Good Day’ takes place on Saturday 20 October, and is jam packed with some of the grittiest crime authors; Stephen Booth, David Mark, Mark Billingham and Val McDermid, to name a few. However, by night many of these authors form a band called the ‘Fun Lovin’ Crime Writers’, so there will be  a chance to join them at Beverley Memorial Hall while they ‘murder songs for fun!’

The fourth and final day looks at ‘Location, location, location - the allure of houses in literature’, with a range of events covering everything from Pemberley to Brideshead, and including a free book discussion entitled ‘The Big Read’ where local bestseller Cassandra Parkin will lead the conversation on one of the nation’s favourite books, ‘Rebecca’, by Daphne du Maurier.

There will also be the ever-popular Children’s Festival, with a fabulous line up of fun authors, energetic storytelling and a healthy dose of toilet humour! Nick Arnold’s ‘Horrible Science Show’ will bring the multi-award winningHorrible Science series to life.

The Festival of Words will continue into early November, with a play written by Elizabeth Godber called ‘The Memory Project’ being performed in East Riding Libraries across the area.

Councillor Richard Burton, portfolio holder for leisure, tourism and culture, said: “The new-look Festival of Words promises to be an exciting collection of events to suit all tastes, interests and ages. I am looking forward to a varied mix of literary genres, as well as theatrical performances in the libraries, and lots for our young readers to enjoy!”
