Students' Fine Display of Stock at Annual Competition

AGRICULTURE and equine students pulled out all the stops to put on an impressive show at Bishop Burton College’s 58th annual Stockmanship competition.

The event is the oldest college-run competition of its kind in the country and sees students from both Bishop Burton College, in East Yorkshire, and Riseholme College, in Lincolnshire, competing in a number of different disciplines.

The idea behind the competition is to enable students to experience what it is like to prepare for a large show and they compete in beef, dairy, sheep and equine classes. They practice grooming and clipping skills and ensure their animal’s diet means it is in optimum condition.

The students taking part prepare for months, developing the skills and knowledge needed not only to compete, but also to take into the workplace when they complete their studies at the college.

The event, held at the Bishop Burton campus, near Beverley, was attended by students’ friends and families, along with dignitaries and industry representatives.

Chief Executive and Principal, Bill Meredith, in announcing the winners, told the assembled crowd: “I’d like to congratulate all the students who have taken part and thank the staff who have helped make this such a wonderful occasion.

“I’d also like to thank all our visitors who are here to day – parents, families, friends, employers and supporters. Stockmanship is a real tradition here at the college and it would not be possible without the support of all of you.”

Under the guidance of master judge, David Abram, officials named Daniel Bates as the overall agriculture winner and Ellie Bucknall as the overall equine winner.

Bishop Burton, which includes Riseholme, is one of the finest land-based colleges in the country.

It was recently announced that both campuses will become new centres of excellence for high levels skills training in the region following a multi-million pound investment.

Bishop Burton and Riseholme will work with partner colleges and universities to develop Institutes of Technology (IoT).

The college is also undergoing a complete refurbishment of its high-welfare pig unit at Bishop Burton.
