Run With It Charity Hires Local Graduates After Successful Internships

A Hull and East Yorkshire-based educational charity has added two Assistant Lead Tutors to its team as part of its strategic growth.

Run With It, which helps to raise the levels of literacy and numeracy right across Hull and East Yorkshire, has recruited recent University of Hull graduates Rebecca Bell, from Brigg in North Lincolnshire, and Georgia Cook, from Brough in East Yorkshire, after they both completed successful internships.

Lisa Dawson, Director of Run With It, said the charity has been working closely with the University to recruit interns.

“We are absolutely thrilled that Rebecca and Georgia have joined us. They have worked incredibly hard to get here and we are so pleased to be able to offer them permanent positions as Assistant Lead Tutors. Both of them want to become teachers in the future so this is the perfect opportunity to get some real, hands-on experience. They will now be helping our Lead Tutors to teach the children on our programmes across all our sites in the region and are already proving to be great assets, not only to the charity but also to the young people who come through our doors.”

Rebecca Bell, who, in addition to her teaching duties, will also act as Administration and Charity Co-ordinator, said:

“I jumped at the chance to have a permanent position at Run With It because the work here is so rewarding. There was one particular case that really stuck with me during my internship. A boy with complex needs who needed extra assistance came to us for a learning day. At the start of the day, he was quite non-verbal and didn’t show much expression but by the end of the day, having come out of the classroom for one of our interactive educational sessions, he was beaming and said to his teaching assistant ‘This is the best day ever’ and said ‘Thank you so much’ to me. His teaching assistant told us he hadn’t spoken like this in a long time and that when his Nana found out she would be tearful. Seeing first hand the impact the Run With It education programmes are having on our young learners makes it all worthwhile.”

Meanwhile, Georgia Cook said:

“I’ve always wanted a career in teaching and I am learning so much already from the lead tutors. This is such a fantastic opportunity for me. During my internship, I got to dive straight into teaching, but what I love most about working with Run With It is that I get to teach Maths and English in amazing environments like the MKM stadium. I already feel a lot more confident in my ability to teach primary school children. It’s such a great way to get into teaching - and learning from qualified teachers is really helping me develop.”

As many youngsters struggle to thrive in a traditional classroom setting, Run With It’s aim is to make learning fun by teaching them in more informal, real-life settings. It means they are not only developing their Maths and English skills without even realizing it, they are also increasing their confidence and self-esteem while developing aspirations and employability skills for the future.

Run With It currently has four education centres at Hull’s MKM stadium, Bridlington Town Football Club, the Flemingate shopping centre in Beverley and Sewell Group Craven Park in East Hull.
