East Riding of Yorkshire Council has welcomed the announcement from The Secretary of State for Transport, Grant Shapps MP, that a new body will be created to speed up the delivery of transport projects and give leaders in the north a direct line to ministers.

The Northern Transport Acceleration Council will play a key role in progressing vitally important upgrades to the Trans-Pennine route, which in turn will support both the North and the country’s recovery post-COVID and further develop the North’s economy for the benefit of its residents, businesses and communities.

“The delivery of infrastructure projects, such as rail improvements, are hugely important at any time. However, given the challenging economic circumstances following the COVID-19 pandemic, it is more important than ever that we deliver capital investments that improve journey times and commutes for workers as well as those that unlock an area’s potential in terms of improving access and removing barriers for business,” said Councillor Richard Burton, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

“I welcome The Secretary of State’s announcement and look forward to learning more about the economic opportunities this will have for the East Riding.

“We would also be interested in discussing the electrification proposals for the Trans-Pennine route and how this could be extended to run through the East Riding and connect to Hull.”
