A new visitor’s guide, supported by Enterprise Inns, has been produced by tourism partnership Visit Hull & East Yorkshire (VHEY) to promote the historic public houses of Beverley.

In 1557 there were 38 drinking establishments in Beverley. Today, there are 30 and the details of these can be found in the new guide as well as a brief history of each, including information taken from Paul Gibson’s Hull and East Yorkshire History website.

Mark McMullen of the Dog and Duck Inn, a VHEY partner, said: “It's a great idea and will put the town’s wonderful pubs back the map. There are some great pubs in Beverley with a fantastic selection of traditional ales, lagers, wine, spirits and a quality selection of food.”

Councillor Jane Evison, cabinet portfolio holder for economic investment and tourism at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Beverley is one of the most vibrant and historic market towns in the country and it is because of this that so many people come to visit.

“Pubs are not only a place for people to socialise and enjoy refreshments; they are also steeped in the history of the communities they serve. From a tourism perspective, this provides an excellent opportunity to bring history to life as well as promote them to visitors.

“The production of this historic guide will help provide an economic boost to local businesses and tap into new audiences from further afield, helping to achieve VHEY’s aim of increasing overnight visitor stays.”
