Orthopaedic Research UK have chosen East Riding Leisure as their ‘Site of the Month’ in recognition of ‘the great work’ at East Riding Leisure Centres in delivering, and raising awareness of, the ESCAPE-pain programme.

The work done by East Riding Leisure has been described as ‘fantastic’.

Councillor Mike Medini, portfolio holder for culture, leisure, libraries and customer service, said: “This national recognition for the excellent work of our Leisure Centres in delivering ESCAPE-pain is well deserved, and I am delighted for all the staff involved. I hope that more East Riding residents will find out  about this programme, and benefit from it.”

ESCAPE-pain is supported by Orthopaedic Research UK, and is offered at East Riding Leisure Centres for people suffering from hip/knee, or lower back pain. It’s a group-based rehabilitation programme for people with chronic joint pain, providing a combination of self-management and coping strategies through education and exercise, working at participants’ own pace with a dedicated instructor.

People wishing to get involved can join at most East Riding Leisure Centres for the Six Week programme, offering two sessions weekly. The Escape pain sessions are free, but participants are asked to join on a reduced membership for just £19.80 for the six weeks. This offers unrestricted access to East Riding Leisure pools, gyms and classes.

Those eligible to join the programme are people suffering with Osteo arthritic hip/knee or lower back pain, an East Riding resident registered to an East Riding surgery, over the age of 18 and who can commit to twice weekly sessions for six weeks and need regular supervised exercise.
