During January, Molescroft School pupils are joining in with the Big Schools’ Bird Watch and getting closer to nature - and inviting Just Beverley readers to join them!

You can help support the RSBP by taking part in The Big Garden Bird Watch during the last weekend in January and contribute to the world’s largest wildlife survey! Full details can be found on the RSBP website https://ww2.rspb.org.uk/discoverandenjoynature/discoverandlearn/birdwatch

Here is a recipe to make your own bird cakes for the garden. These are a great way of feeding birds throughout the winter when bugs and berries are scarce.

What you need: (makes several)

•5 digestive biscuits

•1 cup bird seeds or peanuts

•Half a pack of lard

•Pine cones (optional)

•String (optional)

Crush the biscuits in a mixing bowl using the back of a wooden spoon – and set aside. Do the same with the seeds or peanuts. Cut the lard into small pieces. Mix the biscuits, seeds or peanuts and the lard together in the bowl. Take handfuls of the mixture and form into small cake shapes with your fingers. Or pack around the pine cones or string. Put them in the fridge to harden, then place outside ready for the birds.
