East Riding College students are holding  their annual student conference and exhibition at the Parkway Cinema in Beverley today.

The fifth annual conference is being run by BA (Hons) Contemporary Media Design and Production students who present their show reels and final year dissertations at the event.

The conference is supported by second year students and features work from all media students at an adjoining exhibition which extends into the Flemingate Shopping and Leisure Complex.  The conference and exhibition features work in the areas of film, game, animation, visual effects and digital design, from across the media programmes.

The Media Labs team are presenting a varied conference schedule, including a live podcast and vlogs.  Conference subjects include Decoding Digital Society, Audience Studies and presentations based on final year work such as ‘How Female Protagonists Impact Audiences Views on Anime and Modern Day Feminism’, ‘The Wolf, The Lion & The Dragon: A Case Study into Feminism and Women’s Representation’ and ‘The Evolution of Technology in Broadcasting’.

Programme Leader Adam Corkett said, “The aim of the conference is to showcase student work, bringing together students and industry representatives, and to present some really interesting work and research. There are many related disciplines in media production and the conference provides an opportunity for students to discuss their ideas and show their findings. Final year students organise the event as part of their Live Conference and Exhibition module, they present their dissertations in an accessible and engaging format.  Second years use the opportunity to practice presenting to an audience and first years also contribute some examples of work to the exhibition, making it an all-round celebration.”

Carl Hugh, who is a member of the Media Labs team and final year degree student said, “I’ve found the course really useful, I’m only just realising how much I’ve progressed from FE to now.  I am going to be showing off one of my projects I did last summer for one of my units.  It’s called Move Up - we went into a school and filmed the year sixes as they moved into year seven.  I’ll also be presenting my dissertation on the representation of women in Game of Thrones, with a Q&A.  The conference is a massive platform to get yourself and your work out there.”

Lee Underwood, also a final year degree student said, “I started off at level 2 and my confidence and skills have definitely improved over the years thanks to the help and support of the staff at the College. I’m presenting my animation Stone Baked Age - it’s still a work in progress and I’m hoping to get some feedback on the project to work on when I finish.  I’ll also be showing my show reel and presenting my dissertation on female protagonists in anime linking it into modern day feminism.  I’d not heard of many other media degree courses which have a conference like this, it was one of the reasons I chose to stay here rather than go off to another university.”
