Local Transport Plan for Beverley approved

Tue 10th March 2015

East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Cabinet has approved a new local transport plan (LTP) outlining the strategic approach the authority will take to investing in the area’s transport infrastructure over next 14 years as well as outlining a number of schemes and projects that will be delivered over the next three years.

The Government requires all transport authorities outside London to produce an LTP setting out transport strategies and policies for their area and explaining how funding will be invested to improve the local transport network.

The council’s transport policy team has taken the opportunity to refresh the current third LTP and to prepare a revised strategy and implementation plan, which will be formally adopted on 1 April 2015.  This new plan will be known simply as the Local Transport Plan.

The new LTP includes a 14-year transport strategy for the East Riding which will cover the period from 2015 to 2029. It also includes a three-year implementation plan, which sets out a programme of schemes that will be constructed between 2015 and 2018.

Councillor Symon Fraser, cabinet portfolio holder for environment, housing and planning, said: “The council has an excellent track record in securing funding and delivering transport projects and schemes across the East Riding, with more than £86 million allocated to the authority from successful bids in the past five years, and the new local transport plan will allow the authority to continue this into the future.

“Good transport infrastructure is vital to an area and its economy and the strategy and policies within this plan will help ensure that pedestrians, motorists and the travelling public can continue to go about their day-to-day lives safely and with minimal hindrance.

“The three year implementation plan will see numerous schemes worth over £1.5 million per year delivered in areas across the East Riding.”

The LTP includes broad strategies for road safety, bus, rail, cycling and community transport. Individual transport strategies have also been prepared for each of the East Riding’s 14 main settlements, which includes Beverley. The individual transport strategies include schemes to encourage and support walking and cycling in these locations.

Details of schemes to be delivered over the next three years are available on request the town and parish councils.

The draft LTP was subject to an eight-week public consultation in late 2014 and has been developed in partnership with town/parish councils, ward members and other key local stakeholders.
