Hemingway Bailey, a privately-owned chartered management accountancy practice in Beverley, specialises in helping companies make better use of their financial information. With the ultimate aim of improving its clients’ business performance, Hemingway Bailey also offers statutory financial reporting and taxation services.

Director Alan Hemingway recognises the importance of giving young people opportunities to develop and employed the company’s first apprentice, Evie Molloy, in 2013. The extra capacity has allowed the firm to offer an increased number of services to its growing client base, dramatically increasing turnover.

In a rigorous profession such as accountancy, an apprenticeship provides the perfect framework and support for a hard-working individual to become fully-qualified. At Hemingway Bailey, a three-year AAT* course is followed by a further three years working towards the officially-recognised Chartered Institute of Management Accountants qualification.

In addition to these key milestones, Hemingway Bailey emphasises the importance of personal responsibility, communication and presentation skills in its apprenticeship programme. Trainees take control of bookkeeping, attend client meetings and represent the company at networking events – all important tasks, which incorporate them into the team and create numerous opportunities for personal development.

As a small business, developing a strong partnership with East Riding College helped to streamline the apprenticeship progress - providing training support, administration and securing an Apprenticeship Grant for Employers (AGE). Impressed by the benefits the scheme offers to both parties, the company is planning for another apprentice to join the team in summer 2014.

Inspired by all that she has already learned, apprentice Evie Molloy has formed her own organisation - MixEd - with the aim of sharing her networking and presentation skills with other apprentices and young people in the area.

Hemingway Bailey was shortlisted for the 2013 Bridlington & Yorkshire Coast Training Business of the Year Award, and Alan’s passion for supporting youth development has seen him become an apprenticeship ambassador for the Humberside region.
