For the fifth year running, those preparing for Christmas by shopping in Beverley will benefit from the council suspending parking charges during the three weekends leading up to Christmas.

Pay and display machines in the council’s car parks and on-street parking locations will again be clearly marked to let shoppers know there is no charge for these weekends, starting on Saturday, 6 December.

The scheme forms part of the council’s support for Small Business Saturday (6 December), a national day that aims to promote the importance of small and independent traders.

Councillor Stephen Parnaby OBE, leader of the council, said: “Thanks to its prudent financial management, the council is again able to run this very popular scheme, which has real and tangible benefits for local businesses and for our residents.

“It is quite fitting that the first day of free parking will coincide with Small Business Saturday, a national initiative that this authority is delighted to support.

“The East Riding is home to some of the most vibrant and diverse market towns in the country. Suspending parking charges in the run up to Christmas is a practical way this council can help boost the local economy.”

Julian Minshall, chair of the Beverley and District Chamber of Trade and director of Indicoll, said: “The chamber always welcomes the suspension of parking charges. December is a crucial time for the high street and any scheme that will encourage shoppers is more than welcome.

“Small Business Saturday will publicise the importance of local independent businesses and any help is well received.”

All council car parks will be free on Saturday 6, 13 and 20 and Sunday 7, 14 and 21 December, from 8am on Saturday until 8am on Monday.

Normal parking rules will still apply, such as those around disabled parking bays and maximum stays.
