Fairtrade Coffee Morning to mark the start of Fairtrade Fortnight

Fri 22nd February 2019
Fairtrade 2019 Png

February 25th to March 10th is Fairtrade Fortnight but Beverley's Fairtrade Group is to start the ball rolling with a coffee morning, Fairtrade good stall, cakes and chocolate at Toll Gavel Church's Community Hall tomorrow, February 23rd from 9.30am.

Beverley has just been awarded its Fairtrade Certificate for another year, demonstrating that schools, civic and community groups are 'signed up' to using fairly-traded goods wherever possible. The Fair Trade premium ensures producers get a living wage, otherwise profits would go to other people in the supply chain, such as distributors and supermarkets.

Only 8% of the chocoloate sold in this country is fairly traded! With the world trade prices for cocoa having dropped by up to 40%, that means many farmers are working for very little, which means their businesses are unsustainable which is leading them into poverty. So next time you buy chocolate, check for the Fairtrade logo and know that the farmer who grew your chocolate is getting rewarded for their hard work!
