East Riding Museums may be closed at the moment, but there are still ways to enjoy their unique and fascinating collections.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s new website, Active East Riding, launched last week with ideas for things people can do, learn from, and take part in whilst at home, and is highlighting Museums Online.

Museums Online offers a chance to visit over 80 past and current exhibitions from East Riding Museums, together with exclusive online exhibits, and a way to search the huge collections database.

Online exhibitions to visit include :

‘Convict Connections’ : the story of prisoners from Hull and East Yorkshire transported to Australia between 1788 and 1886
‘East Riding Yeomanry’: the story of the men who joined the East Riding Yeomanry from its creation in 1903 until the Armistice at the end of the First World War in 1918
‘Transforming the Town’ : the exhibition which should be on display now in Beverley Guildhall, looking at dramatic transformations in Beverley over the years
‘Reading the Landscape’ : an exhibition of sounds and photographs of the Yorkshire Wolds by Peter Heaton, which should be on show now in the Treasure House in Beverley
‘Journey into Abstraction’ : John Sprakes's retrospective exhibition, which should be on display now at Beverley Art Gallery, covers over 60 years of the artist's professional life.

Museums Online also includes an opportunity to see pdfs of past exhibition - from the dizzy colours of 1960s East Riding and the history of local pubs, to life during wartime and the local economy.

Museums manager Nial Adams said : “ We are all obviously disappointed that our museums have to be closed at the moment, but Museums Online is a great way for people to be able to see our exhibitions online, and to visit some of the exhibitions which were only able to open briefly before the government’s restrictions came into force.”

Visit www.ActiveEastRiding.co.uk and go to Museums Online to see the full range of collections.
