East Yorkshire Open Studios 2016

Fri 7th October 2016
Open Studios Jpg

On the 8th, 9th, 15th and 16th of October, artists across Beverley and East Yorkshire will open their studios to the public, allowing unprecedented accesses to their artistic spaces and work.

It is such a great initiative, that really gets the community involved with local artists, and it is growing every year. Amy Hutson, who studied painting and printmaking at Glasgow School of Art, is one artist who is opening her studio this year. She specializes in lithography, a process of printing using oil and water, and creates her prints on limestone. She explains how she got involved with open studios through just seeing it advertised last year.

“I didn't have a studio at that point. Through going to other open studios and talking to artists who have been involved in previous years, I figured out what I needed to do for the open studios and what other art groups in the area I could get involved in.” Certainly, after having just returned from studying at the Tamarind Institute in New Mexico, Amy will undeniably have some amazing work for people to view at her studio event.

The Open Studios event offers young, up-andcoming artists the chance to meet and connect with other more established artists in their local area.

This is certainly something that Anna Walker, who specialises in East Yorkshire wildlife-inspired watercolour paintings and cards and has just graduated from The University of Exeter, is hoping to do. She cannot wait to attend the Open Studios event. She said: “It is a really great way to meet and connect with local artists’, she explained, ‘as well as get inspired!’ Indeed, Anna is already looking into how she can be involved with the Open Studios next year, “but I might need a proper studio” she laughs. Perhaps by next year, she will.
