Councillor Margaret Chadwick has been elected as the new chairman of East Riding of Yorkshire Council following the annual general meeting of council.

Councillor Chadwick, who will serve until May 2019, has been a councillor for Bridlington South ward since her election in 2003.

Councillor Chadwick was born and raised in Driffield and started her working life as a dental nurse before working for a local optician.

She took a change of direction in her career and became manager in the sales and administration department at Satra Motors at Carnaby, who imported Lada cars.

It was here she met her husband, Chad and they have a son and daughter, as well as five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

In 1987, Councillor Chadwick was elected to represent the Bridlington South ward on the former East Yorkshire Borough Council and in 1995/96 was elected mayor and also made an honorary alderman of the borough.

She also served on the newly-formed Bridlington Town Council between 2000 and 2007.

In her time as an East Riding of Yorkshire Council ward councillor, she has served on many committees and was a member of the cabinet from 2007 to 2015 serving as portfolio holder for council support services.

Councillor Chadwick has already had a taste of what her year as chairman will entail as she was the chairman’s lady when her husband Chad was chairman of the authority in 2012/13.

They are also the first husband and wife to have held the position of chairman.

Councillor Chadwick said: “I’m looking forward to the year ahead and my aim is to visit as many areas of the East Riding as possible and to meet as many people, communities and organisations as I can.

“I’m not just the chairman of the East Riding but an ambassador to promote the fantastic area we live in.”

The charity Councillor Chadwick will be supporting during her year in office will be the Bridlington branch of Marie Curie.

Councillor Pat Smith, who is ward councillor for Dale, has been elected vice chairman of the council and will serve until May 2019.
