East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s new adult learning centre, in Beverley, has been officially opened by Councillor John Dennis, chairman of the council.

The new adult learning centre provides courses for people aged 19 years plus, who are looking to improve their skills, gain new qualifications for work or entry to higher education and those who might simply be looking for a new hobby. The council’s employment, education and skills team is holding a number of events during September to throw open the doors to members of the public.

The centre is based on the site of the old youth centre in Burden Road and has three large training rooms and runs a much wider variety of courses for the residents of Beverley and surrounding villages. The courses available include a lead to: ICT and computer skills, counselling, business administration, maths, English, photography, mentoring and teaching assistant qualifications. The council’s former employment and skills centre at 33 Lairgate has now closed and merged with the new adult learning centre.

Councillor Dennis said: “It was a great pleasure to cut the ribbon and officially open the council’s new adult learning centre in Beverley. Fully refurbished, this new centre will allow our employment, education and skills team to provide a wider choice of courses for our residents and in a venue that provides improved facilities.”

Sara Arnold, employment, education and skills group manager, said: “This new and vibrant centre delivers accessible and stimulating courses to help local residents improve their confidence and work/life prospects. We're excited that we've now got our own purpose-built centre in Beverley and hope that residents come along and take a look now that our doors are open and see what opportunities are available.”

If you fancy learning a new skill or hobby the centre also provides courses in crafts, creative writing, dress making, flower arranging and mindfulness courses on offer from September 2016. More courses will be added through the year, with family learning and seasonal courses on offer.

Councillor Jane Evison, cabinet portfolio holder for economic investment and tourism, said: “The opening of the new adult learning centre in Beverley is an important step in this council’s plans to secure the long-term future of adult learning and ensure that it is delivered in a sustainable manner. Whether you wish to learn new skills or explore a new hobby, the adult learning centre in Beverley has something for everybody and I would encourage residents to take a look at the course guides for the autumn term or come along to see the new centre now that it’s open and see what is available.”
